Metronidazole

The mechanism of action of the antibiotic is by diffusion of the drug into the anaerobes and causing a reduction reaction by ferritin. The reduced metronidazole and the other toxic products of reduction get accumulated inside the anaerobes and cause cidal effect to the bacteria.

The antibiotic Metronidazole or flagyl is generally used for treating any kind amebiasis. The general dose is 500mg Metronidazole parenterally for a minimum of 5 days followed by oral dose of metronidazole for 7 days. For amebic liver abscess the parenteral dose is continued for a longer duration.

For the treatment of brain and lung abscess, metronidazole is given along with the other antibiotics parenterally.

For the treatment of H. pylori infections which cause Gastro esophageal reflux disease commonly called GERD, metronidazole is given along with pantoprazole and ampicillin for at least 8 weeks orally.

In the treatment of Trichomoniasis, metronidazole is given 500 mg thrice daily for 7 -14 days. It is important to treat both the partners as there is a risk of re- infection as the untreated partner may act as carrier.

Metronidazole is available in as metrogel, Metronidazole gel, to treat acne rosacea. It should be applied only locally.

It is also available as Metronidazole cream base to apply locally which is used to treat bacterial and trichomonas vaginitis.

The use of Metronidazole for dogs is for treating anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections.

The drug should be stored in a cool and dry place kept out of reach of children.
